In this issue Levänen et al 1 demonstrate that exosomes isolated from bronchoalveolar
lavage fluid (BALF) contain micro-RNAs (miRNAs) that are different in asthmatic patients
compared with healthy volunteers. Exosomes are membranous nanovesicles of 30 to 100
nm in size, which arise from endosomal compartments called multivesicular bodies (MVBs).
During the biogenesis of exosomes, the membranes of MVBs invaginate, forming
