The microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (Mitf) is critical for mast cell development
based on the severe mast cell deficiency seen in Mitf mutant mice. Mitf also is important for
the development of melanocytes, osteoclasts, and retinal pigment epithelium. The lineage-
