The 18 glycosyl hydrolase family of chitinases is an ancient gene family that is widely
expressed from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. In mammals, despite the absence of endogenous
chitin, a number of chitinases and chitinase-like proteins (C/CLPs) have been identified.
