The periodic fever syndromes are disorders of innate immunity. They may be inherited or
acquired and present as recurrent attacks of apparently spontaneous self-limiting
inflammation without evidence of autoantibodies or infection. Over the past decade-and-a-
half there has been significant progress in their understanding and treatment.
