Progress toward HIV eradication: case reports, current efforts, and the challenges associated with cure

AR Martin, RF Siliciano - Annual review of medicine, 2016 - annualreviews.org
An estimated 35 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, yet a widely applicable cure
strategy remains elusive. Recent case reports have suggested that curing HIV infection is
possible, renewing excitement about research efforts. We describe those cases and discuss
their relevance to the global HIV epidemic. We also review ongoing cure strategies that are
transitioning from the lab to the clinic, and the assays and clinical assessments that can be
used to evaluate cure interventions.
