The lower uterine segment: Its derivation and physiologic behavior

The present concept of the lower uterine segment is briefly reviewed. Revision of this
concept is made necessary by certain recent work, the essential features of which are
outlined. To conform to these observations, it is suggested that the inferior border of the
lower uterine segment be placed at the fibromuscular junction of cervix with corpus. It is
considered that the superior border of the lower uterine segment occurs at the point along
the uterine wall below which the uterus must dilate in order to allow the baby to pass. The …
