Twenty years ago, the American-European Consensus Conference on ARDS emphasized
the complexity of the pathogenesis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and
suggested that separation of ARDS patients into more homogeneous subgroups could be a
useful strategy to facilitate understanding of this syndrome. The consensus panel authors
