BACKGROUND: Tachykinins such as substance P are localized in unmyelinated slow-
conducting C fibers that can be activated by noxious stimuli and tissue inflammation.
Substance P is seldom expressed in fast-conducting large-diameter (A-fiber) vagal sensory
