Methods Nineteen nonedematous, adult patients with CRF (14 men and 5 women) were
studied after giving us their informed consent. Ten patients had glomerulonephritis, three
had diabetic nephropathy, two had polycystic renal disease, and the remaining patients had
hypertension-nephrosclerosis, or unknown renal disease. All patients had been referred for
dietary therapy of CRF, were active, and had no intercurrent illnesses. No patient had more
