Fine structure of rat incisor ameloblasts during enamel maturation

Incisors of adult rats were fixed by a glutaraldehyde-OsO 4 procedure. The enamel organs
were separated from the incisors and embedded in Araldite. Adjacent to the enamel, the
ameloblasts have an apical labyrinth which consists of tightly interlocking cell processes and
is associated with a group of mitochondria. Droplets of dense material which may
correspond to enamel proteins being resorbed are present within the extracellular spaces of
