Genetic factors including α1-antitrypsin deficiency are important in COPD. Candidate gene
association studies in COPD are reviewed. Efforts to identify interactions between genetic
factors and environmental determinants such as smoking may lead to improved
understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease.
