The tumor suppressor PTEN encodes a lipid phosphatase that negatively regulates the
phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT cell survival pathway. Mutations of this gene are common
in brain, prostate, endometrial, and gastric cancers but occur rarely in non–small-cell lung
