Following a brief mention in Homer's Odyssey in the 8th century BC, Hippocrates, Aristotle,
Celsus, and Galen all wrote in detail about the omentum, mainly in relation to hernia and
trauma. i Its overall function remained a mystery. Possible attributes included fat storage,
lubrication, and warming of the intestines. The ideas of classical times survived in various
