Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease process that is characterized by
inflammation of the synovial tissues lining the joints. Proliferation of synovial lining cells and
infiltration of inflammatory cells, including monocytes and activated leukocytes, into the joint
tissues results in formation of pannus tissue that covers the surfaces of articular cartilage
