Renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) often behave aggressively and are associated with a poor
prognosis. Tumors are both chemoresistant and radioresistant and surgery is the only
known curative treatment for localized disease. Historically, one third to one half of patients
have metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, approximately 25% to 50% of
those who are treated for localized disease eventually will develop metastatic disease [1–3].
