Regional anxsthesia can be induced by intra-arterial injections of local anaesthetics distal to
a sphygmomano-meter cuff. This technique has been used in 306 opera-tions on the hand
and forearm. There were 22 failures, all due to technical faults. The method requires less
anaesthetic than intravenous injections. Unsuccessful attempts at arterial puncture
sometimes resulted in transient vascular spasm, but this was the only local complication. No
toxic reactions were observed.
