Epithelial cells lining the airways and alveoli undergo a number of changes in morphology
and function during this developmental process. In the pseudoglandular phase (16 to 18 d of
gestation in the rat), epithelial tubes are lined with high columnar epithelial cells (1, 2) and
specific epithelial cell subtypes are not recognized. Differentiation proceeds, giving way to
the appearance of the several airway epithelial cell subtypes characteristic of adult lung.
