Second trimester amniotic fluid ferritin and transferrin levels in normal and anencephalic pregnancies

Second trimester amniotic fluid ferritin and transferrin levels were assayed in normal and
anencephalic pregnancies. When matched for gestation both ferritin and transferrin were
elevated in the anencephalic pregnancies (P< 0• 01 and P< 0• 001 respectively). Ferritin
levels remained constant between 13 and 22 weeks in normal pregnancies, whereas
transferrin increased with advancing gestation.
Summary
Second trimester amniotic fluid ferritin and transferrin levels were assayed in normal and anencephalic pregnancies. When matched for gestation both ferritin and transferrin were elevated in the anencephalic pregnancies (P<0•01 and P<0•001 respectively). Ferritin levels remained constant between 13 and 22 weeks in normal pregnancies, whereas transferrin increased with advancing gestation.
