BACKGROUND: Despite equivalent performance as assessed by objective external
measures, women tend to underestimate their abilities compared with their male
counterparts. METHODS: The difference in ordinal values from faculty and resident self-
evaluations was calculated for each general and plastic surgery resident. Objective external
