Breach of tolerance to gluten leads to the chronic small intestinal enteropathy celiac
disease. A key event in celiac disease development is gluten-dependent infiltration of
activated cytotoxic intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), which cytolyze epithelial cells causing
