Since the original isolation of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) from a macaque with an
AIDS-like disease, numerous studies have demonstrated the close biologic and genetic
relationship of the SIVs to the HIVs. Probably most important, the clinical spectrum of
disease associated with SIVmac/SIVsmm infection in rhesus monkeys is strikingly similar to
