Staphylococcus schleiferi, a new species of Staphylococcus described in 1988 [2], has been
considered to be a significant pathogen in some European countries [3]. We present a case
in which the role of S. schleiferi as an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen appears to be
highly probable. A 66-year-old man was admitted to the hospital in March 1992 because of

A 66-year-old man was admitted to the hospital in March 1992 because of an episode of severe gastrointestinal bleeding with epigastric pain, hematemesis, and melena. The patient had a 3-year history of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, esophageal varices associated with recurrent episodes of bleeding, and chronic sclerotherapy.
