We have previously demonstrated that epidermal growth factor (EGF) inhibits calcium-
dependent chloride secretion via a mechanism involving stimulation of phosphatidylinositol
3-kinase (PI3-K). The muscarinic agonist of chloride secretion, carbachol (CCh), also
stimulates an antisecretory pathway that involves transactivation of the EGF receptor (EGFR)
