Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an mRNA surveillance mechanism that detects
and rapidly degrades aberrant transcripts containing premature termination codons (PTC).
In this issue, Lejeune et al.(2003) identify three enzymes, the poly (A) ribonuclease, PARN,
the decapping enzyme, Dcp2, and the 3′ exosome component, PM/Scl100, which in
concert catalyze both nuclear and cytoplasmic NMD.
