Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a neuroendocrine tumor of the thyroid C-cells. MTC
may arise as a sporadic tumor or as a component of one of three autosomal dominant
familial cancer syndromes, MEN 2A, MEN 2B, or familial MTC. Recent studies have
identified mutations of the RET protooncogene in the proximal long arm of chromosome 10,
