THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM functions as an important, though accessory route, by which
tissue fluid can flow from the interstitial spaces back into the blood. 1 The lymph nodes
supply the main sources of lymphocytes to the peripheral blood, 2 and function as filters,
removing bacteria and other noxious agents from the lymph. 3, 4 The nodes also function in
a primary capacity in the development and continuance of immunologic reactions
particularly those concerned with cellular immunity.
