The prevalence of fungal infections remains high, and it is associated with significant
mortality and morbidity. Macrophages are heterogeneous population of effectors enriched in
regions of Candida colonization. These cells sense Candida, and are critical in the
resolution of these infections. Here, we describe how macrophages are generated in the
presence of colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1); an important cytokine required for the
survival, proliferation and ex-vivo differentiation of monocytes to macrophages.
