Patients suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders are likely to search elsewhere
when conventional therapies fail them. Enthusiasm for complementary and alternative
medicine use and research is clearly growing. Studies of acupuncture and herbal therapy for
functional gastrointestinal disorders in the Western literature have often been limited by poor
study design but these interventions may have promise and are discussed here.
